"...****....Cynical listeners who think contemporary jazz is hermetic, or is criminally inferior to the American product or to the style of the 1950s, should be silenced by the quality of music on this CD. It features the members of Jazzgroove, a Sydney-based collective that boasts some of the best young musicians in the country. Even though it suffers a little from its eclecticism - which is true of most compilation albums - it nonetheless bursts with youthful energy and innovative ideas. Highlights include the startling cross rhythms and polytonality of Mr Sinister's Salt and Pepper Squid, James Muller's pretty ballad Beethoven - an unexpected choice, but a rebuff to anyone who thinks he's all chops - and the sophisticated sound stylings of the Band of Five Names. It's also reassuring that players such as these can be heard regularly doing their thing."
