Jazzgroove in October
October 7
8:30pm- 3ofmillions
finn ryan - drums
adrian klumpes - rhodes/electronics
abel cross - acoustic bass guitar/electronics
Brave turns, textural layering and a strong sense of united phrasingdirect the music from intimate storytelling to epic intensity. This is music for the laughers, music for the cryers. The rawest of emotions are sure to be unleashed. Keep your ears peeled and eyes open.
10pm- MISINTERPROTATO (Brisbane)
SEAN FORAN - piano/rhodes
JOHN PARKER - drums
PAT MARCHISELLA - acoustic bass
Brisbane trio MISINTERPROTATO come to Jazzgroove as part of their 2008 national tour. Driven by pianist Foran, teamed with John Parker’s expansive dynamic and timbral range on percussion and Patrick Marchisella’s visceral touch on the double bass, the trio perform modern jazz highlighting melody and intuitive interaction.

October 14
8:30pm- Hunter-Keegan-Mannell Organ trio
Matt Keegan - Electric Saxophone
Stu Hunter - Organ and Virus
Evan Mannell - Drums
A fresh take on a classic combo, the idea of this band sounds almost as good as they do. May well be funky so get down early.
10pm- Gerard Masters Trio
Gerard Masters - Piano
Evan Mannell - Drums
Cameron Undy - Bass
“Mannell loves the shock value of unexpected wallops and Masters and Undy love grooves as ends in themselves, independently of the brilliant solos Masters layers on top. The trio is just as convincing sculpting softer contours, too… Their ability to pull back to a moodiness or lyricism make the emphatic passages all the stronger.” SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
October 21
8:30pm- Jeremy Rose Quartet
Jeremy Rose - alto and soprano saxophone
Jackson Harrison - piano
Alex Boneham - bass
James Waples - drums
Fresh from a recent trip abroad performing and studying in London, Oslo and New York, Jeremy is back and ready to unleash his new ideas with this great band. "...Rose's compositions being more interesting the more they strayed from the jazz tradition. His soprano saxophone playing was especially fluent, melodic and intense." John Shand, SMH 2007
10pm- Exposed Bone
Borthwick - bone
Baz - guitar
Clarkey - bass
James H - drums
“Laced with weighty potent passages of unashamed rock and funk, this trombone and guitar-led recording exposes the groove and grunge sound of the younger Sydney jazz set. The wailing and growling trombone of Jeremy Borthwick also shows piston-like agility especially on the Indian and African flavoured pieces along with ferocious guitar work from Ben Hauptmann...”
January 2008 - Limelight ABC
Exposed Bone Vol II, Plugged - Voted in the top ten cd's for 2007 by SMH
October 28
8:30pm & 10pm- MEDIUM BROWN
Dave de Vries – guitar
John Hibbard – trombone
Jamie Cameron – drums
Ben Waples - bass
Nick Garbett – trumpet
Jeremy Rose - alto saxophone
Hugh Barrett - keyboards
Medium Brown sound like this: bing ding ga ding ding sho bidilup ba de bup, da nana da nana de dee da, dogoda dogoda sling galing aling flobadabadabadaba, but with more of a trombonish penny-farthing style backbeat with heaps of strumming.
