New Year, New Gigs

The 2012 Summer Festival was a blast, with gigs for kids, hipsters, outdoors and indoors, workshops, and we gave away an amazing recording prize to the amazing Alcohotlicks.

Now we're settling in for the regular years programming, over the next few months you can catch Bernie McGann, Daryl Pratt, Brendan Clarke with Craig Scott, Mike Rivett and Mike Nock. Dive in!

Jazzgroove in November

4th November
8:30pm - The Fantastic Terrific Munkle

Fresh from recording a brand new album, The Fantastic Terrific Munkle return to the Jazzgroove stage, armed with plenty of new pieces, and of course a few old favourites. Music to make you laugh, cry, dance, or at least surreptitiously tap your foot.

Fresh from a standing ovation at the Jazz:Now festival, and having just recorded the follow up album to his acclaimed debut The Muse, Hunter has firmly placed himself as a band leader to be rivaled and a composer to be remembered.

Fundraiser - 8:30pm till late


"Lay them atop one another and cover them with cheese. They shall be our children and be named Jazzgroove."

This year's fundraiser will be lynch-pinned by the famous and funky Carl Dewhurst Quartet, featuring a shambolic pop quiz known as the Cheese Wheel, spun by the stylish and sexy Ladies of Cheese with delectable giveaways and very special guests, including Virna Sanzone, Darren Percival, Rai Thistlethwaite, James Greening, Elana Stone and the Jazzgroove Cheesewind Horns - John Hibbard, Matt Ottignon, and Matt Keegan.


18th November
8:30pm - The Subterraneans

Steve Hunter - electric bass

With funky underpinnings, hard beats and soulful guitar, led by sax playing that uses every register, the Subterraneans offer a fusion of styles drawing from Jimi Hendrix to Thelonius Monk and beyond. After playing every Thursday in October at The Empire Hotel, this hard grooving, note spitting band will be smoking!

10pm - The Alcohotlicks

Following two cracking gigs at the Opera House and the Basement, the Hotties take to the Jazzgroove stage, performing some ferocious tracks from their debut release, You You. Virtuosic, exquisitely musical and not to be missed.


25th November
8:30pm - Lahuha

Kim Lawson - saxophones

James Hauptmann - drums

Lahuha presents a full-bore compositional and improvisational vehicle that lends the music tremendous direction and passion. Unlisted wicked grooves with nuance and energy provide a slick soundscape for some wild creativity. New compositions from each player see a diversity of feels and textures stretching into some emotionally dynamic and unique playing.

10pm - King Neptune

King Neptune is a contemporary jazz, rock, funk, pop power trio; combining elements of Hendrix, The Police, Wayne Krantz and My Angel's Boom Box. Gritty, grooving and hard hitting with an emo edge. Feel the power of this trio. Boom shaka!
