November 2009

Earlier this week JG reps attended the State Governments launch of the new simpler and fairer approval system for live entertainment in venues. While this has been in the works for sometime it is now active. As of Monday the 26th October 2009 the POPE licence no longer exists. This offers great hope for our local scene and will in due course offer greater performance opportunities for musicians and performance artists. How the new legislation effects you: This now means that restaraunts, cafes, bars etc whos primary business is not entertainment are now able to have live performance without costly fees and aplications. Below is a copy of the Governments information sheet for musicians. This was a produced as a result of a live music forum held at Government house earlier in the year in which Jazzgroove was involved.

FACT SHEET FOR MUSICIANS: What has changed?
The NSW Government has removed the need for venues to have a Place of Public Entertainment (POPE) licence—venues can have live entertainment
as part of their main business without the need for separate approval. Entertainment is now part of normal activities at pubs, cafés, restaurants
and clubs during the week and on weekends. Examples include a small restaurant engaging a jazz trio, a Celtic folk band playing in an Irish pub or
a rock band at a club.

Does this change give me more opportunities to perform?
Yes. The red tape has been removed for venues, which gives them greater incentive to engage musicians to perform.

How are noise complaints dealt with?
The council and local police will still handle noise and other complaints. In addition, the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing has powers under
the Liquor Act to respond to complaints about venues.

These powers include:
• Negotiating a workable solution with venues and the local community
• Responding to formal disturbance complaints
• Issuing warnings or directions to a venue, and
• Imposing conditions on the venue’s liquor licence to address the concerns.

What responsibilities do I have as a musician?
To ensure that you, the venues you perform at, and the people who come to hear you play are respectful of the local community. Musicians also have
a role in promoting the integration of live music into venues. We want what you want! Both the NSW Government and musicians want more live music across NSW. We understand the importance of having a variety of performance venues to foster a creative and dynamic music industry.
Music is set to make a comeback in NSW with the introduction of a simpler and fairer approval system for public entertainment.
The NSW Government has cut red tape for live entertainment in venues— pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafés and other live music spaces no longer
need a special licence. This measure will enliven NSW’s music scene, and allow musicians to do more of what they do best—perform. This fact sheet aims to help musicians to understand the new system.

Jazzgroove Jam Session
This month Jazzgroove has a couple of pieces of new and exciting news. Firstly we are thrilled to present the inaugural Jazzgroove Jam, hosted by Sydney's finest trios. To be held on the Tuesday before each JGR album launch, this is a unique chance to hear the legends at play, and then play with the legends! Our first offering on Tuesday 24 March on the altar of jazz is the Mike Nock Trio, led by internationally renowned and locally feared (and respected) pedagogue, Mr Mike Nock. A true legend and a really nice guy, Mike will present a set of his music at 8:30, then the floor will be opened to all comers, provided they are Jazzgroove members.

New Label Manager
Jazzgroove sends out a big welcome to Simon Barker who has joined the team and been appointed the new Label Manager and Head of Distribution for Jazzgroove Records. To celebrate we have put together three new Bundle Cd Packs, so you can get a taste of what Jazzgroove Records has to offer. Purchase your favourite artists, check out something new and save a bundle.

Letter From President January 2009
Greetings Jazzgroovers!

Jazzgroove is entering its eleventh year. We continue to present some of the most exciting and original music being played in Australia. Our regular gigs and Jazzgroove Records continue to foster jazz-based and improvised music of new and established talent.

In 2008 Jazzgroove had quite a few changes in administration and personnel. Memberships renewals have all been brought into alignment and we have new membership cards too. We are now registered with the Registry Of Cultural Organisations. This means we no longer have to charge GST and we can receive tax deductible donations. Best of all we are able to reduce our door prices at the Excelsior to $8 (for members), $10 (for students and SIMA members) and $12; this will kick off in January 2009.

To all members thank you as always for your ongoing support. We trust you are enjoying the generous discounts offered by our sponsors in our new membership package that was developed in 2008. Go to our membership page for more information on great deals and savings.

An extra big thanks to all the committee members and volunteers. Everyone is welcome to help out, just let us know if you'd like to do something, and we always appreciate your feedback.

I look forward to seeing everyone at more great gigs at the Excelsior Hotel and the Basement in 2009. May it be happy and prosperous for us all.
