Jazzgroove in July
July 1
8:30pm - The Turbs
Kim Lawson - Alto, Tenor Sax
Zoe Hauptmann - Bass
James Hauptmann - Drums
New project! 'The Turbs' are the freshest collaborative trio to hit the streets. Drawing on more influences than they can poke a stick at, the bands vibe has evolved into ghetto grunge jazz. Over the last 10 months The Turbs have been crafting a bunch of new tunes and are ready to unleash their glorious Turb action.
10pm - Matt McMahon trio
Matt McMahon - piano
Jono Brown - bass
Simon Barker - drums
"The Matt McMahon trio will play pieces from their recent album "Ellipsis" (on Kimnara records). The guys are gearing up to record some new material later this year and will play new compositions based on the concept - "Have Fun Together - IMPROVISE!"
July 8
8:30pm - The Three Omegas
Dave de Vries - guitar
James Waples - drums
Mike Majkowski – bass
'Formed in 2007, The Three Omegas present a unique approach to the guitar trio format. Their music is stripped back to its raw elements where aspects of rhythm and melody are treated delicately and can often build into surging waves of sound with a minimalist approach.'
10pm - Zoe and the Buttercups
Zoe Hauptmann -acoustic bass
James Hauptmann -drums
Ben Hauptmann -banjo
Aaron Flower -guitar
John Hibbard - trombone
Karl Laskowski - sax
After a sell out gig at the Melbourne fringe festival Zoe and the Buttercups return to the Jazzgroove stage with all new material before heading into the studio to record their second album.
July 15
8:30pm - Marcello Maio Trio
Marcello Maio – piano (keyboard), piano accordion
Alex Boneham – bass
James Waples – drums
This is Marcello’s virgin experience playing for Jazzgroove and he has brought with him two fine gentlemen to delve into his bag of song. A new trio with new music. Something could go wrong or worse, it could all go to plan.
10pm - Invisible City
Martin Kay - Alto Sax
James Ryan - Tenor Sax
Tim Stocker - Tenor sax
John Hibbard - Trombone
Simon Ferenci - trumpet
Sam Golding - trumpet tuba
Craig Naughton - drums
Kevin Hailey – bass
David Reaston - Guitar
Invisible City asserts that what makes up a city is not so much its physical structure but the impression it imparts upon its visitors, the way its inhabitants move within, something unseen that hums between the cracks. An indivisible city of improvisers & composers. Incite visibly; Invisibly cite; (Invincibly civil?): Supersonic confabulations #@%.
July 22
8:30pm - JAZZ ORGANISM:
Jeremy Sawkins-guitar
Darren Heinrich-organ
Spike Mason-saxes
Toby Hall-drums
“The universe may be thought of as a living organism, in which case the universe would have been created by reproduction rather than by design…While Jazz Organism navigate the deepest corners of obscurity, they maintain a visibly post-modern visage. Their music is a bold and scarified indictment of the mechanised theses in which we dwell.” Cyril Farqhuar - the Bomaderry Tribune
10pm - Elana Stone band
Elana Stone - vocals/keys
Aaron Flower - guitar
Zoe Hauptmann - bass
Evan Mannell - drums
The Elana Stone Band come to us as a fairly decorated band: best jazz artist at the 2004 MusicOz Awards, winner at the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 2005 and a semi-finalist in the Montreaux Jazz Festival vocal competition. Time Out says: What an amazing band! Joseph Digiglio says: When's your album coming out?
July 29
8:30pm 8-ball - the 'b' team
David Theak - Alto / Soprano Sax
Murray Jackson - Alto Saxophone
Richard Maegraith - Tenor Sax
Matt Keegan - Tenor Sax
Nick Bowd - Baritone Sax / Bass Clarinet
Hugh Barrett - Piano
Brendan Clarke - Contrabass
Evan Mannell - Drums & Cymbals
Fresh from their opening break at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 2008
The highs and lows aka solids and stripes aka yellows or reds aka shirts or skivvies aka cuts or un-cuts aka halves or full's aka over or unders aka big ones or small ones aka spots or stripes aka 8-ball, the 'b' team go where 5 saxophones, played simultaneously, rarely venture; into the realms of good taste! No fouls, no shooting backwards from the 'd', no trick shots, no more pool jokes (i promise), just beautiful compositions from German Wunderkind, Florian Ross and sublime playing from the sax and rhythm sections of the Jazzgroove Mothership orchestra.
10pm - Dave Panichi Septet
Warwick Alder - Trumpet
Peter Farrar - alto
Dave Panici - Bone
James Muller - guitar
Matt McMahon - piano
Mike Majkowski - bass
Tim Firth - drums
The legendary Dave Panichi has worked with jazz luminaries as diverse as Sarah Vaughan, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Buddy Rich Big Band, Aretha Franklin, Peabo Bryson, Mulgrew Miller and Frank Sinatra. Dave wants his listeners to know they can expect three things from any gig of his: great melodies, grooves & solos.
