Chris Abrahams and Lloyd Swanton (of the Necks), saxophonist Dale Barlow and drummer Andrew Gander strapped a rocket to local jazz by forming the Benders in 1980. In the heyday of Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and the Angels, they strutted a rock-band aesthetic of explosive energy and slick presentation, with the star being the collective.
Pianist Gerard Masters, bassist Cameron Undy and drummer Evan Mannell are capable of similar bulldozing potency. Mannell loves the shock value of unexpected wallops and Masters and Undy love grooves as ends in themselves, independently of the brilliant solos Masters layers on top. The trio is just as convincing sculpting softer contours, too, then easing them towards an edgy intensity via dynamic changes that may be dramatic or finely nuanced. Their ability to pull back to a moodiness or lyricism make the emphatic passages all the stronger. The original compositions are augmented by Neil Finn's Message to My Girl.

More Info:

Pendulum is the third album from The Gerard Masters Trio and the first with new drummer Evan Mannell. There is also a strong blues/roots tinge to some of the tracks, as is evident in ‘Stockton Shuffle’ and some what more elusively in ‘Richie P’. As always Cameron Undy steers the ship to higher ground with his uncompromising dedication to solid and extrapolating bassline construction. The music ranges from high energy post bop, to intricate ballad and free playing, in the vein of Bill Evans and Paul Bley.
The Gerard Masters Trio has been performing together since 2000 and have developed into one of Australia’s finest modern jazz groups. Led by New Zealand born Gerard Masters, the trio has been a significant part of Jazzgroove Records. The Gerard Masters Trio has performed at major jazz festivals in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Europe.
