January 2010

Carl Dewhurst

Tuesday 19 January
10pm- The Drips

Carl Dewhurst - guitar
Cameron Undy - bass
Evan Mannell - drums

The Drips drop, their aim; to Drip!  For the last year, the Drips have been working on their own style of interactive deconstruction simply described as "Dripping". Drop in to the new 505 for a listen.

“In this age of convergent politics and convergent art it's refreshing to know anarchy still has a champion" SMH

8:30pm- Gowk (Belgium)
Teun Verbruggen - drums
Yannick Peeters - bass
Christian Mendoza - Piano
Andrew Claes - saxophone

Described as the Jim Black of Belgium, Teun and his band Gowk have escaped the European winter for a nice summer tan. The main point of their playing is the interaction. Gowk go from one tune to the other, improvising and creating new forms and ways to play the tunes. There are no rules set in advance, making their playing very adventurous and fresh. Still maintaining their ruthless individuality, Gowk create deeply personal and ultra modern music.

Tuesday 26 January
10 pm- The Doig Collective

Simon Ferenci - trumpet
Dave Panichi - trombone
Kim Lawson - alto
James Loughnan - tenor
Tim Stocker - baritone
Glenn Doig - piano
Brendan Clark - bass
Dave Goodman - drums

The Doig Collective emerges from obscurity this month with a fresh fistful of favourites.  Described as "a special place to listen and explore" (Brewnote), come hear how eight musicians advance against Doig's original music, rather than just the usual three pronged attack.

8:30 pm- Scott Simpkins Quartet

Scott Simpkins - tenor sax
Dave de Vries - guitar
Abel Cross - bass
James Waples - drums

The Scott Simpkins Quartet is cohesive yet never the same. Possessing an air of angry sadness and gentility, a rare sweetness, and the power to make the air stand still. Their music has a laid back glow but the ability to eventually explode with experimental insistence.
