Tuesday 4th May
Reaston/Kay 10pm - Reaston Kay Effect

Martin Kay - alto sax
David Reaston - guitar, pedals, paper
Jamie Cameron - drums
Inspired by the art of bonsai, the Reaston/Kay Effect have become a trio, bringing in master pruner Jamie Cameron. They will attempt to sonically summon the mythical goose-barnacle tree. The birds hang by their bills until blossoming, then drop into the sea.

Debonairs 8:30pm - Debonair Gentlemen

Max Franklin-Sax
Grant Arthur- Trombone
Shazzam Dobson- Bass
Playing together since 2006, including well received performances at the Adelaide Fringe and Sydney University Converge Festivals, the Debonair Gentlemen bring their unique style of group interplay to Jazzgroove for the first time.

Tuesday 11th May
the Grid 10pm - the grid (Perth)

Tim Jago - guitar
Dane Alderson - bass
Ben Vanderwal - drums
Direct from Perth into your mind. This collective is an electric, eclectic trio that play a range of music from originals to the now obligatory jazz Radiohead cover. The grid have been together for a year and half, spending many a day in a suburban lounge room experimenting with the sonic possibilities of the guitar trio. Expect jazz sensibility, fusion audacity, quasi-rock poses, minimalist posturing, electro hand claps, country spooning and some good music that you will probably like.

Dave Jackson 8:30pm - Jackson Jive

Dave Jackson - alto sax
Dave Panichi - trombone
Hugh Barrett - piano
Brendan Clark - bass
James Waples - drums
Jackson Jive is the launch pad for a pocket rocket full of hip hop infused, vaguely jazz oriented music. In their Jazzgroove debut, they'll be sending a bunch of new tunes into orbit, so come on down and jump on board.
"Dave Jackson's alto saxophone does not just have a certain lightness of tone, it actually seems to emit light”. John Shand, SMH.
“...(jackson) can manipulate his tone, mid phrase, in a way that heats the surface of the sound so that it burns for a moment like a brick from the kiln, sometimes releasing that heat quickly so that the rest of the phrase runs like a fresh sunlit spring.” John Clare.

Tuesday 18th May
Phil Slater 10pm - The Darts

Scott Tinkler - trumpet
Phil Slater - trumpet
Steve Elphick - bass
Simon Barker - drums
This new ensemble was born from Tinkler and Slater being invited to perform at the Festival of New Trumpet in New York. Both trumpeters have been lauded internationally as two of the most original and exciting players in the world - to have them both performing together for Jazzgroove is a brassy treat.

Denominators 8:30pm - The Denominators

Paul Derricott - drums
Brendan Clarke - bass
Hugh Barrett - piano
Dave Jackson - sax
"...everyone is playing really great which is heartening to see. It's a very valuable thing for Australia for these great musos to continue to have a musical dialog "in the moment" informed by history and an ongoing pursuit of excellence..."
Sean Wayland

Tuesday 25th May
Tim Clarkson 10pm - Tim Clarkson Trio
ALBUM LAUNCH: CRAB

Tim Clarkson - tenor and alto saxophones
Phil Stack - double bass
Cameron Reid - drums, percussion
Tim Clarkson has just returned from several months of study with renowned saxophonist Mark Turner in New York, and "CRAB" marks his debut release as leader. His bouyant and quirky compositions create a playful dynamic in the band, throughout their many performances at venues in Sydney over the last three years.

"Clarkson is constantly engaging and driving on alto and tenor saxophone..." John Clare album review.

Phil Slater and Matt McMahon - photo Roger Mitchell 8:30pm - Matt McMahon and Phil Slater duo

Matt McMahon - piano
Phil Slater - trumpet
These two exceptional musicians have worked together for many years, in many different scenarios and are the toast of Australia’s jazz scene. Tonight they add a dash of classy wisdom to the proceedings. Mmm, toast. (Photo Roger Mitchell  http://ausjazz.net/)
