It’s not often that hip-hop and Chassidism are used in the same sentence..unless you’re talking about ‘Asthmatix’.. described as ‘stuck somewhere between Kingston Avenue and Utica’ the band is an instrumental mix of jazz and Jewish melodies combined with funk grooves, Chassidic children’s vinyl, turntablism and virtuosic playing..
8:30pm Java Quartet + 1
Michael Galeazzi - bass
Matthew Ottignon - sax
Greg Coffin - keys
Mike Quigley - drums
Jonathan Palmer - laptop

From the static of cyberspace comes Java + 1, an "old school electronica" reinvention of some Java Quartet back catalogue. Remixed from a late 90s drum 'n bass, techno and trance perspective (as part of Michael's postgraduate studies), the results will be released later this year on the album PIMP MY JAVA. The usual Java suspects are joined onstage by Jonathan Palmer on laptop, bouncing beats and sounds in a frenzy of post-modern confusion. Turn on, tune in and boot up with Java as they ride the silicon train to transcendental nothingness.
May 12
10pm Waples Bros + Aaron Flower
Dan Waples - alto
Aaron Flower - guitar
Ben Waples - bass
James 'Pug' Waples - drums
Back from a 2 year stint in Melbourne, Dan has returned to Jazzgroove with his old mate Baz and the Bros. New tunes will be performed, some improvisation will be played over the changes of these tunes, and happiness will be rewarded to all that come and listen!
Simon Ferenci Quartet
Simon Ferenci - trumpet
Hugh Barrett - rhodes
Mike Majkowski - bass
James Waples - drums
The Quartet's music is a combination of composition, improvisation and interaction with as much focus on sound and texture as melody and harmony. Now into their fifth year as a band their group sound is simultaneously cohesive and full of contrasts; the result of each individual member's acute listening and quick musical reflexes combined with a willingness to push the music in new directions.
May 19

10pm The Turbs
Kim Lawson - alto, tenor sax
Zoe Hauptmann - bass
James Hauptmann - drums
New project! 'The Turbs' are the freshest collaborative trio to hit the streets. Drawing on more influences than they can poke a stick at, the bands vibe has evolved into ghetto grunge jazz. Over the last 10 months The Turbs have been crafting a bunch of new tunes and are ready to unleash their glorious Turb action.
8:30pm Macklin/Newcomb Duo
Hannah Macklin - voice/effects
Steve Newcomb - keys/effects
Two of Brisbane’s most in-demand jazz musicians, Hannah Macklin and Steve Newcomb, form the collaborative “Macklin/Newcomb” duo. With a repertoire that consists of Macklin and Newcomb’s original compositions, modern jazz and heavily layered pop (Bjork, Rufus Wainwright, Radiohead), and an emphasis on new sounds, improvisation and playful interaction, this new music venture seeks to create something removed from reality and inspired by constant curiousity.
