FREE STUFF:
Afternoons during the Futura Fest will be a free stuff fiesta, as we open the doors to people of all ages and musical persuasions, fire up the BBQ, try on a little edumacation and prepare you all for the thrills of the evening’s program.
BBQ 3pm: Getting into the festival spirit, the Ex has offered to light up the BBQ on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Our members will spin their jazz vinyl as we all enjoy a sausage or vegetarian equivalent.
Jazz Vinyl: What jazz lover is not also a lover of high fidelity, old fashioned quality and nostalgia? During our afternoon BBQs we're leaving the iPod at home and instead encouraging Jazzgroove members to bring a sample of their jazz vinyl to spin on the provided decks. Expect a rolling playlist of the favourites of some of your favourite musicians. These late lunch festivities should segue neatly with our free afternoon gigs at the Ex.
Free Arvo Gigs: On Saturday afternoon the free concert will be performed by the Cope Street Parade, a rambunctious group of youngsters indulging in old timey music. Lots of fun and wobbly singing. On Sunday we have the Marty Wieczorek Quintet, his gentle sounds a perfect complement to a slow afternoon. The downstairs bar of the Macquarie Hotel offers up some free evening entertainment too. Shannon Barnett Quartet (Melb) and Glitch Jukebox from 9pm on Friday 15th and the Doig Collective and The Turbs on Saturday night. Look out for us on the streets as you wonder from each of our fine venues, expect to catch many a Jazzgroove busker out and about and even a marching band on Sunday evening taking over the streets of Surry!
WORKSHOPS:
Jazzgroove is proud to present two free workshops as part of our Futures Festival. Workshops are available to High School and Tertiary students, current Jazzgroove members and festival pass holders. Our all ages work shops will be held at the Redfern Town Hall, a fitting venue as so many musicians live in the Redfern/Darlington area, it makes a whole lot of sense to have something happening in their neighbourhood for the Festival.
The workshops will be held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, featuring Baz on Saturday and the Greg Coffin Trio on Sunday. Each band will unpack their compositions, improvisatory concepts, the art of running an ensemble. The second set will simply be the the bands doing what they do best, blowing a set of great music.

He has also featured with Paul Kelly’s favourite songwriter King Curly, and co-leads a host of projects including the power trio the Alcohotlicks, the country inspired bands Zoe & the Buttercups and Sidecar, and grunge influenced outfit the MFW to name a few. The band’s rhythm section comprises some of Sydneys best and in demand musicians, Zoe and James Hauptmann (electric bass and drums respectively).
