Jazzgroove in August

Tuesday August 5
8:30pm -
James Le Fevre Quintet

James Le Fevre – Saxophones
Rob Lee - Trombone
Ben Foster - Keys
Kane Watters - Bass
Evan Dorrian - Drums

The James Le Fevre Quintet plays original material drawing upon a smorgasbord of influences encompassing Jazz, Dance, Blues, Funk, Latin, Hip Hop and gypsy music of the Balkans. The ensemble is characterised by its contrast of intricate, extended arrangements with open, loose blowing sections.

10pm – Theak-tet
David Theak - 'king super 20' tenor sax
James Muller - Guitar
Brendan Clarke (snr) - contrabass
Tim Firth - Drums & Cymbals.

Former Jazzgroove President / Artistic Director, founder of Jazzgroove
Records, and musical director of the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra,
Dave Theak, brings his remarkable 'tet' back to their spiritual home at the Excelsior. Theak's 'tet' always puts out a huge amount of energy and commitment whenever they perform, and expect no different this time around.

August  19
8:30pm - MALONE
Nick Hoorweg - electric and double bass, backing vocals
Evan Mannell - drums, percussion, backing vocals
Charlie Meadows – electric and acoustic guitar, backing vocals
Gareth Malone - vocals

Melody based, electro-acoustic, mood fusion with tuneful, old-style vocals, expertly crafted arrangements and warm-toned backing harmonies.
Many lyrics feature future lands beyond dreams and loves eternal return but really cut with a heavy knife of lost-world entertainment. As well, this music isn’t loud; all notes roam undamaged, wild and free.

10pm - Matt Keegan trio
Matt Keegan – Saxophone/Electric sax
Cameron Undy – Electric Bass
Dave Goodman - Drums
The MK3 are on tour this August.  Come and catch them mid-tour and in full flight.
“Keegan takes the [tenor trio] format in a new direction”
MCA Music Forum 2008
“If there is a sound that embodies the Jazzgroove sound then Keegan’s Tone Imagination is it…. Brilliantly recorded and if you have the luxury of space largesse – turn it up!”
ABC LIMELIGHT MAGAZINE 2008

Aug 27 Wednesday
From 9pm Album launch at The BASEMENT Aunty Richard

“Leaf Blower” NEW ALBUM JAZZGROOVE RECORDS

Joel Woolf-sax
Franco Raggatt-guitar
Alex Hewetson-electric bass
Tim Firth-drums

Aunty Richard achieves an uncanny, measured sound that maintains a live, spontaneous feel.  “Leaf Blower” is an album that never lets you get too comfortable.  There is calm, but anarchy is soon to follow; the band provides pause for reflection one moment and a call-to-arms the next. Sometimes desolate, more often manic “Leaf Blower” is the soundtrack for every city.
