Exploring the fine lines of improvising in and out of time/tune/taste. Fortune favours the wrong. Yin/Yang says at it's worst it's best, at it's best it's bad. And we all know bad is good.

Zoe Hauptmann – bass, back up vocals

Our favourite genre busting singing gal is back, fresh from a career high as a winner of Rockwiz (SBS) and moonlighting with Deborah Conway’s Broad and dance pop band Jackson, Jackson. Elana and her powerhouse band will present all of their hits, including a nasty rock song that is currently on rotation at Triple J.
8:30pm- James Annesley Quartet (Melb)

James Annesley - sax
Tom Lee - double bass
Hugh Harvey - drums
Hugh Stuckey - guitar
Hailing from Melbourne, this ensemble’s music draws influence from serene, earthy folk and hard hitting rock ‘n roll. James’s original compositions are rich in dynamic contrast and varying timbral textures, leaving plenty of room for adventurous, freewheeling improvisations.
Tuesday 21 April
10pm- James Ryan Trio

James Ryan - tenor sax, saxello and flute
Brendan Clarke - double bass
James Hauptmann - drums and cymbals
The JRT is back with new tunes and a new album, “Bitter Sweet” released through the ABC. Having already performed from Darwin to the Sound Lounge this year, this band promises to continue redefining the old/new axis of jazz.
“What leaps out is the near virtuosity of the leader, as a player of three instruments (tenor sax, flute and saxello) and as a composer…. a smorgasbord of hard-swinging excitement…” John McBeath, Weekend Australian
8:30pm- ToneWheel featuring Darren Heinrich

Darren Heinrich: organ
Simon Relf: guitar
Tim Firth: drums
Todd Hardy: trumpet
Tim Stocker: tenor
Nick Bowd: baritone
A Hammond Organ Trio is a rare animal, and rarer still is a larger combo with horn section. ToneWheel fleshes out Darren Heinrich's original material using this wider tonal palette and draws inspiration from Dr. Lonnie Smith and 'Big' John Patton.

Not to be confused with Happy Tourist, X-Fade, Mr Sinister, the Giganarchists or any other odd band name that has made its appearances for Jazzgroove in the past, this is the stridently individual trio that recorded the album Urban Parkland, "innately bursting with forward momentum" J Shand
