JAZZGROOVE IN DECEMBER

2nd December
8.30pm - Peter Farrar's Group

Peter Farrar - saxophone
Rivka Schrembi - cello
Mirabai Peart - violin
Sam Dobson - bass
Olaf Hitter - drums

Improvisation is hard and scary, joyous and easy, often mundane, sometimes inspired. Composition is a personal account of all these things. This group is an intense selfexploration for both the composer and the performers, a learning experience for all involved, audience included. Enjoy the ride!

10pm - The Jess Green Septet meets Bree van Reyk
Bree van Reyk - percussion, loops, accordion
Jess Green - guitar, voice
Zoe Hauptmann - bass
Evan Mannell - drums
John Hibbard - trombone
Simon Ferenci - trumpet
Matt Ottignon - tenor sax

Truly a master musician, Van Reyk has lent her unique style to a wide spectrum of settings; from Holly Throsby to the SSO. This set will provide many multi-textural scenes to feature Bree, while paying tribute to some of Green's favourite composers and artists including Cage, Kandinski, and Kafka.

9th December
8.30pm - Tina Harrod Jazz Band

Tina Harrod - vocals
Jonathan Zwartz - double bass
Hamish Stuart - drums
Matt McMahon - piano

"Tina Harrod has one of those gorgeous vocal instruments, which just oozes soul, sex and sensuality" - SMH

After years of working with some of our most iconic musicians including the late Jackie Orszazcky and Jimmy Barnes, Tina now steps out front as she performs jazz spins on songs from Stevie Wonder, Dylan, Nick Drake and a number of originals.

10pm - The Vinson/Newcomb Project (NYC/BRIS/MELB)
Will Vinson - alto, soprano saxophones
Steve Newcomb - piano, rhodes
Sam Anning - bass
Sy Strumsalot - guitar

We extend a hearty welcome to our visitors, from New York City and Brisbane respectively and accompanied by our Melbourne brethren. They have worked with such varied luminaries as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Katie Noonan, Ari Hoenig and James Sherlock so expect world class playing and composition.

Dec 16th  8pm - late
Jazzgroove Christmas Party at the Basement + Greg Coffin Album Launch

This year we decided to go out in style, so join us at the Basement as we throw a little Christmas shindig and celebrate our final album release for 2008. Sure to be a little naughty and oh so tasty, so don't forget your mistletoe!

Paul McNamara solo piano

The Greg Coffin Trio album launch

The Felas

Arne Hanna - guitar
Scott Leishman - guitar
Dave MacRae - keyboards
Stu Hunter - keyboards
Declan Kelly - drums
Simon Milman - bass
Grant Naylor - percussion

The Felas play Afrobeat, "invented" by Fela Anikulapo Kuti in the mid 1970s. The result of Afro-American music returning to the Motherland, specifically Nigeria, Afrobeat melds funk and jazz with styles such as Apala and Highlife for a supremely lip-smacking and toe-tapping result.
