Stay warm with like-minded Sydney jazz hipsters

Like the Mamas & The Papas sang it, all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey. Ok, but Sydney is still a stunning town when the sun sets early, and an early sunset means even you early birds are shrouded in darkness entering your favourite Surry Hills place of entertainment. No, not the strip club upstairs.

Leading us down the windy slope to winter are old label favourites Leonie Cohen and Informal Troupe, stage regulars Amphibious and Showa 44 and an exciting new collection of familiar people, Greening From Ear to Ear.

Down at winter base camp, our June lineup sees the return of the ADs Pick; an allstar lineup paying a long-awaited tribute to the music of Roger Frampton, and those ripening chestnuts of Sydney music, Mike Nock and Jeremy Sawkins.

Jazzgroove @ the Basement featuring The Vampires and support Stu Hunter, piano solo. The Vampires feature in the first of a new bi-monthly series at the Basement, featuring musicians from The Jazzgroove Association.  This dynamic, artist-led and focused non-profit organization is committed to presenting and raising the profile of jazz-based music in Australia and is instrumental in creating a unique Sydney sound, where jazz meets everything else.

The talents of Jazzgroove members is unquestionable with our members consistently scooping the highest Australian awards.  If you want to be inspired and hear the latest sounds Jazzgroove is it.

The Vampires formed in 2004, while its four members were studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Beginning with apparent influences such as Charlie Parker, Bernie McGann and Ornette Coleman, the band has incorporated the compositions of Garbett and Rose to find a style drawing from Afro-Carribean and South American grooves, and more open improvisation within these grooves, in their original material. The group features some of the elite emerging musicians from Sydney, with the uncannily natural combination of the two horn players and composers, Nick Garbett (trumpet) and Jeremy Rose (alto saxophone) and the well established and like-minded rhythm section team of Mike Majkowski (double bass) and Alex Masso (drums).

‘The Vampires give an energetic and original performance of reggae infused jazz.’ This gig launches their debut album “South Coasting” on the Jazzgroove label. The album features special guest Shannon Barnett.

Stu Hunter is an exciting and masterful pianist and composer. His incredible diversity of styles coupled with an instinct for the musical moment has made him a musician favoured by the best in the industry.  His music traverses a dynamic and powerful range of emotional states and musical landscapes.
